Who you gonna call? Our new Applications Lab
It’s a nightmare scenario that haunts every medical device engineer. You’re on the brink of a clinical trial, and the design verification build reveals there’s a problem with your device.
Who you gonna call? Cobalt Polymers’ new Applications Lab.
A key feature of our new facility, our dedicated Applications Lab supports customers’ Pebax and Polyolefin Heat Shrink Tubing projects. Our technical team can collaborate with you to:
Help you choose the right tubing size, durometer, and wall thickness
Develop the process for applying the tubing: time, temperature & equipment
Troubleshoot the application of your tubing onto the substrate
Here’s how we recently helped a customer quickly find a solution to an issue that could have derailed their clinical trials.
The customer was getting ready for clinical trials with a device for the hospital environment that incorporated a low-durometer Pebax Heat Shrink Tubing, which made their device soft and flexible. After doing design verification builds, they realized that the tensile strength was too low, increasing the risk of the material tearing. The customer reached out to us to help them define the problem and find a solution.
In the Applications Lab, the Cobalt Polymers team quickly discovered that the wall thickness had to be increased. Over the course of a month, we conducted pull testing using a range of wall thicknesses and durometers for the application. Collaborating closely with the customer, we developed custom tubing with the specifications needed to meet their design parameters and eliminate the risk of tearing. We also did a series of First Article Inspection (FAI) studies to verify that the modified tubing conformed to their design specifications. The device is now on the market.
“If there’s something weird, and it don’t look good,” our Applications Lab is here to help. Send us your substrate and let’s talk about the best tubing and application process for your project.
